Traditional Bobotie

📝 Ingredients (Serves 6):

  • 🥩 500 g (1.1 lbs) ground beef
  • 🧅 1 red onion, finely chopped
  • 🍞 1 slice of whole wheat bread
  • 🥛 25 cl (1 cup) milk
  • 🍑 1 tbsp apricot jam
  • 🍇 1 handful of raisins
  • 🌰 1 handful of walnuts, chopped
  • 🥚 5 eggs
  • 🍋 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 🌶️ 1 tbsp curry powder
  • 🌾 1 tbsp turmeric
  • 🌿 1 tbsp dried coriander
  • 🛢️ Olive oil for cooking
  • 🧂 Salt, to taste
  • ⚫ Pepper, to taste

📋 Directions:

  1. 🔥 Preheat the Oven:
    Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. 🍞 Soak the Bread:
    Soak the slice of bread in half the milk until softened.
  3. 🧅 Prepare the Filling:
    Peel and finely chop the red onion. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, squeezed-out bread, onion, 2 eggs, walnuts, raisins, apricot jam, lemon juice, curry, turmeric, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  4. 🍳 Cook the Mixture:
    Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the meat mixture and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly, until lightly browned.
  5. 🥘 Assemble the Bobotie:
    Transfer the cooked meat mixture to a baking dish.
  6. 🥛 Make the Custard Topping:
    Whisk the remaining eggs with the rest of the milk and the dried coriander. Pour this mixture evenly over the meat in the baking dish.
  7. 🔥 Bake:
    Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until the custard is set and golden brown.
